This class will introduce students to this wonderful, traditional material imported directly from the Perdomo factory in Mexico where it is still created by hand using the traditional technique. Each student will make an 8”x8” piece. During this one day intensive a “brief” history of Mexican smalti will be provided along with insight into design and colour theory. Students will learn to cut and set the smalti using modern tools and techniques (dual wheels). A demonstration of the hammer and hardie method will be provided along with a discussion of the numerous setting methods. This class includes all materials and tools. Designs will be provided. Due to time constraints students will be sent home with all the materials required to finish their pieces on their own so duals will be required but can be purchased here at the studio. Each student also receives a coupon for 15% off smalti at Mosaic Beach Studio (can be redeemed in-store or online).
