In November and December 2011 I was invited to Cambridge Bay, Nunavut to work with the Kitikmeot Heritage Society in creating a gorgeous mural in their heritage centre. Students at the local high school worked with the KHS on the design which was selected to honour their inuit culture and the northern animals that have historically sustained them. The design was emailed to me and I went to work drawing out the entire mural to scale which I transported with me. Colours were chosen and all tools, materials and tiles were shipped up a month in advance of the project. The goal was to involve the local school children, the elders and others in the community in the creation of this mural that was installed inside the library. I think you can see by the images attached that we succeeded in both involving everyone...and creating a beautiful piece of art for them to enjoy!!
Thanks to Renee Krukas of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society for selecting me for this project. It was the experience of a lifetime and I loved every minute of it. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did!
